What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Our root canal therapy in Broomfield is a procedure designed to save a tooth damaged by deep decay, infection, or trauma. Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.

When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause severe pain, sensitivity, and swelling. Furthermore, if left untreated, the infection can spread to surrounding tissues and may lead to tooth loss.

During root canal therapy, we carefully remove the infected pulp, clean the inside of the tooth, disinfect it, and seal it to prevent further infection. This process allows you to keep your natural tooth while eliminating pain and restoring its function.

Who Needs Root Canal Therapy?

You may need root canal therapy if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Persistent tooth pain or sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a specific tooth
  • Discoloration or darkening of a tooth
  • A small bump or pimple on the gums

However, not all cases show obvious symptoms. Routine dental exams allow us to detect issues early and recommend treatment before the problem worsens. If you suspect you might need root canal therapy, Dr. Burns and Dr. McNeeley will perform a thorough evaluation and discuss the best options for your care.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy offers several advantages, including:

  • Pain Relief: The procedure eliminates the source of infection, providing immediate relief from discomfort.
  • Preservation of Your Tooth: Root canal therapy saves your natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction and more invasive procedures like implants or bridges.
  • Improved Oral Health: Treating the infection helps protect surrounding teeth and gums from damage.
  • Restored Function: After a root canal, the treated tooth can function just like a healthy tooth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

The Root Canal Process

  1. Consultation and Diagnosis: We begin with a detailed examination and imaging, such as X-rays, to confirm the need for root canal therapy.
  2. Anesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth.
  3. Removing the Pulp: A small opening is made in the tooth, and the infected or damaged pulp is removed.
  4. Cleaning and Disinfecting: Our dentist will carefully clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth and its canals to remove all traces of infection.
  5. Filling the Canals: Once clean, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection.
  6. Restoring the Tooth: In most cases, we will place a crown on the tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance.

The entire process usually takes one or two visits, depending on how complex the treatment is.
